Got ProtecTIER? Let’s talk.
With over 50 years of data protection experience, DSI has got your back(up).

In less than 12 months, all clients on IBM’s virtual tape library (VTL), known as “ProtecTIER,” will need to be up and running on a new solution for their backups. End of support for ProtecTIER is November 2020, which means those clients need to start planning a migration strategy. DSI was selected in 2018 by IBM as the only qualified and supported solution for replacing current ProtecTIER environments.
DSI and IBM work closely together on all VTL-related projects and we even have several of our solutions in place at IBM Rochester, Minnesota, “Home of the IBM i.” During the selection process to find the best solution to replace ProtecTIER environments, several VTL solutions were tested by IBM Lab Services. DSI was selected based on a several key differentiators:
- DSI VTL is purpose built to handle the high demands of IBM i environments
- DSI is heavily invested in ongoing software development for the IBM i platform
- DSI support is exceptional and is shown with our 98% customer retention rate
DSI is the only provider that has the experience, high quality data parsers for BRMS reports and automation tools to make the transition smooth and seamless. Over the last 14 years, the DSI services team has performed hundreds of migrations, installations and data center relocations for some of the largest organizations in the world. In order to properly plan and execute these complex migrations with minimal impact on the business, DSI has written several tools to not only estimate the timeframe needed to complete a migration, but also identify what will be migrated and prioritize the import process to get your business onto a supported solution before the November deadline. Finally, DSI VTL Conductor has been enhanced to fully automate the entire migration process. With this enhancement, you no longer need to batch process your migration, perform any manual intervention, or risk missing a deadline because a process was not started or updated.
No need for DUPTAP, direct VTL-to-VTL import
The DSI VTL has the ability to perform data migration not only from ProtecTIER, but almost every device as it relates to tape. This could be a physical library or another virtual library. The connectivity and migration can be done two different ways, which is also a key benefit to the existing ProtecTIER clients. You aren’t required to use your IBM i to run DUPTAP or DUPTAPBRM for a successful migration. DSI gives you the unique ability to connect your current library device directly to the DSI VTL and perform VTL-to-VTL migration. This process simply runs in the background and copies volumes from your old library to the new library on the DSI VTL. Once all data is migrated, you simply change the TAPMLB device to point to the new library on the DSI VTL. All of your BRMS data is intact and you’re ready to continue business as usual on your brand-new solution without skipping a beat.
If you have ProtecTIER, let us show you why the DSI VTL is the best solution for you moving forward.
