Linux* has risen to the top of key OSes in all modern-day workloads, becoming a preferred server OS in environments that include high-performance computing, accelerated computing, massively parallel computing, and big data/analytics workloads environments.

Linux on IBM POWER* leverages a vast open-source ecosystem that fuels the speed of insights. Today, IBM clients are making strategic investments with open source in mind. The combination brings Linux and Power Systems* together for AI and mission-critical applications. Offering Choice

IBM has reinforced flexibility and choice for clients by helping them build once and deploy anywhere in a hybrid multicloud environment. The Red Hat Enterprise Linux system has been tuned and optimized for the IBM Power Systems platform over the course of a multidecade partnership. Building on this partnership, IBM Power Systems clients can now benefit from the speed and simplicity of Red Hat’s OpenShift* deployment engine. Clients also gain an operational management advantage with Red Hat OpenShift Container platform across all footprints of the hybrid cloud, including IBM public cloud, third-party public clouds, IBM Power Systems, IBM Z* and x86. This OpenShift synergy on the IBM Power Systems platform accelerates the hybrid multicloud deployment of modern workloads like AI, as well as mission-critical workloads.

The recent acquisition of Red Hat has made IBM a leading hybrid cloud provider. In addition, IBM will retain strategic partnerships with SUSE and Canonical (Ubuntu). SUSE and IBM Power Systems servers running SAP S/4HANA continue to be one of the strongest in-memory database solutions on the market. In addition, Canonical and the Ubuntu OS have been leading in the public cloud arena with the “OS of choice” for developers and research departments. With each of these premier OSes, clients can purchase the OS and support from IBM, directly from the distributor or via an IBM Business Partner.

The Future of Linux

The acquisition of Red Hat demonstrates IBM’s view that Linux is important for today and into the future—from cloud to AI to mission-critical enterprise deployments. For IBM Power Systems, Linux is driving key strategic workloads that run better on Power*. In fact, AI is the fastest growing market segment. Gartner predicts that by 2030, every job we know today will be augmented by AI. With our Linux solutions, IBM will lead the industry as AI touches us all in ways we can’t yet predict.

In addition, IBM Power Systems running Linux is becoming the server of choice for running SAP HANA. Over the past four years, nearly 3,000 customers deployed SAP HANA on the IBM Power Systems platform—one of the fastest adoption rates in the industry. It's the first platform to offer virtualization in SAP HANA deployments and continues to advance its leadership in virtualization scalability.
