Enabling the Future Mainframe Landscape Through an Open DevOps Revolution
The IT landscape is ever-changing and rapidly modernizing, and the mainframe is at the center of these changes.

One of the most crucial parts of ensuring the success of the mainframe for years to come is making it open. We’re making it easier for developers to use different technologies and shape mainframe code in the same ways they do on distributed or cloud environments. The Open Mainframe Project’s Zowe framework, established by Broadcom, IBM and Rocket Software’s contributions to the Open Mainframe Project (OMP), along with our contributions to the Eclipse Che IDE is an excellent example of just this.
Aligning with the concept of being no different from any other platform is key to addressing the current platform skills gap. Rather than newer mainframe developers being restricted to the tools previously available on the platform, they can develop on the mainframe using Git-based SCMs and IDEs or choose legacy tools if they prefer them. In doing so, developers feel greater confidence in their abilities to develop on the mainframe more quickly and the platform is open to the next generation.
At the same time, we must ensure that the platform continues to deliver greater business value. By opening up the mainframe to task runners and scripting tools like Gulp and Python, you can automate the build and test environment. These automated functions allow your teams to spend more time on higher value tasks, such as enhancing product or service delivery.
Why does this matter? It’s not just for the sake of modernizing. It’s not about appearances. It’s about keeping both your mission critical mainframe software and its community of developers strong, resilient and adaptable for years to come.
