An Important IBM Z Anniversary Worth Noting
The mainframe platform is still relevant, still evolving and still the best option for enterprise computing.

The answer is that the mainframe platform is still relevant, still evolving and still the best option for enterprise computing. Oh, and as a performance guy I can also say that the Z platform provides so many measurement insights, that analysis is always a journey of discovery.
As I said, I’m a performance guy who has worked with enterprises all over the world. In fact, working with Z shops globally has taught me the importance of us performance people working together on this journey of discovery. We have been provided the tools, now let’s find the answers.
Now, I truly didn’t intend this partner perspective to be all about the greatness of Z. While Z is not the perfect platform, it’s still the best at enterprise computing.
This year marks the 25th anniversary of the announcement and availability of the MVS Workload Manager (WLM), Parallel Sysplex and Datasharing. The year also marks the 25th year since IBM made the leap from bipolar technology to CMOS technology.
As I write this, I realize that today Z professionals are fortunate to be working with a platform special in so many ways. Pick a discipline. For me, it is performance. For you, it may be your interest in security, applications, maintenance, databases, system integrity or other disciplines of modern enterprise computing. Behind every one of these disciplines, is many years of intellectual thought, exploration and development.
The significance of this 25th anniversary should not be minimized. One could argue that these now established technologies breathed new life into the mainframe (which at the time was called a dinosaur). While very true, I also believe that these technologies solidified the definition of the qualities of service required for enterprise computing. It’s easy to talk the talk, but Z walks the walk.
It’s important for the mainframe community to continue this important path. By reaching out and helping each other, we can walk the walk of Z computer performance analysis together.
