The latest IBM POWER7* announcements include some exciting developments in performance, energy optimization, virtualization, high availability and systems management—all designed to bring value to businesses. Included were some IBM Rational* announcements to provide Power Systems* application-development solutions, helping organizations get the most value from their applications and development teams.

The Rational team announced IBM Rational Developer for Power Systems Software* and IBM Rational Team Concert* for Power Systems Software. Organizations developing applications for IBM i or AIX* can now have a complete application-development solution from IBM composed of development tools, application-lifecycle management tools and compilers—increasing developer productivity, improving application performance and lowering costs (Figure 1).

A Strong History

The Rational group has a strong history of providing modern application-development tools for the IBM i market, including Rational Developer for i (a modern integrated development environment for creating and maintaining RPG-, COBOL-, CL- and DDS-based applications) and Rational Team Concert for i (a collaborative software-delivery platform with integrated work-items management, planning, source control, build, dashboards, reporting and process control). It’s also had a strong family of compilers for the entire Power Systems platform: AIX, IBM i and Linux*.

Until now, IBM hasn’t had a native application-development environment for AIX, leaving organizations with the challenge of wanting to use IBM’s advanced compilers for AIX to get the best performance from their Power Systems investments, but developers being left to use older, less productive text-based editors and debuggers for AIX.

That’s all changed with the Rational Developer and Rational Team Concert for Power announcements. Organizations can now expect full native application development tools for all Power Systems environments, helping make developers more productive and decreasing costs. Rational Developer for Power is one product in a family of integrated development environments for developing applications for Power Systems servers, including:

  • Rational Developer for Power Systems Software: new tools for developing C/C++ and COBOL applications on AIX and RPG and COBOL applications on IBM i
  • Rational Application Developer for WebSphere* Software: tools for developing Java* and Java Enterprise Edition (Java EE) business logic, Web 2.0 rich Internet applications and Web services
  • Rational Business Developer: tools for developing EGL business logic, Web 2.0 rich Internet applications and Web services
  • Rational Developer for i for SOA Construction: a software bundle including Rational Business Developer and the RPG and COBOL development tools; this provides a modernization solution for businesses running on IBM i
