Want something to change? Do it together.

Want something done right? Do it yourself. Want something to change? Do it together. That might have been the mantra for a small group of large companies in the mid-1990s. They wanted to ensure IBM unleashed the full power of the AS/400 to handle their IT infrastructure no matter how fast or how big they grew.

The creatively named Large User Group (LUG) turned into the most enduring and successful model for cooperative collaboration between enterprise systems users and IBM. Today, the LUG has more than 100 member companies and meets three times a year in Rochester, Minn.

Its traditions include a cherished lug wrench that’s handed to new IBM executives to remind them who’s boss. Nobody who’s met with them in the deep winter cold of Rochester, Minn., in February is in any doubt on that point.
