The need for data storage, protection and backup continues to become increasingly important. Digital data has morphed from items primarily categorized and stored according to business criticality to items that must be stored and backed up regardless of their perceived importance.

And while digital storage devices become more compact and yet have higher capacity, businesses find themselves facing the daunting task of not only retaining these massive data amounts but also backing up the stored data seamlessly and nondisruptively.

For businesses small and large, a primary goal is to implement a data-storage system that adequately protects and backs up data without impacting overall IT performance and avoids downtime as much as possible, if not entirely. Considering today’s vast data amounts, this is no small order, particularly when many business-IT processes are already stretched thin.

“What we’re undergoing right now is a drastically changing data-storage landscape, and it almost seems to be changing on a daily basis,” says Chris Zaremba, senior technical staff member, FlashCopy* Manager architect and Tivoli* Storage Manager data-protection client architect. “It’s a huge challenge for companies to find stability in such an ever-changing data-storage backup environment and implement the kind of solutions they know they can count on for the foreseeable future.”

IBM Tivoli Storage FlashCopy Manager (FCM) can deliver the kind of backup and restore capabilities companies of all sizes should be interested in leveraging. And, the most recent FCM 2.2 release improves on the solution’s nondisruptive backup capabilities, offering support for custom applications and extending platform support to Linux* and Solaris environments and applications.

“With FCM, a company can be up and running with a top-tier data-storage backup solution in less than four hours, with minimal maintenance requirements.” —Chris Zaremba, senior technical staff member, FlashCopy Manager architect and Tivoli Storage Manager data-protection client architect
