Managing a one-person IT shop doesn’t have to be a Herculean feat, according to Steve Wozniak, IT manager with Callico Distributors (and, despite the name, not the co-founder of Apple). Sure, he’s responsible for everything that happens in his department, from improving business-intelligence reporting to managing systems, but like many others of his lone-wolf ilk, he’s found clever ways to make up for his lack of staff.

“I had the opportunity to hire an entry-level person at an entry-level salary, but that would’ve meant I would also be getting entry-level skills,” Wozniak says. “So I prefer to just outsource some jobs at a fraction of that salary amount to an actual bona fide IT guru—without me having to train anyone.”

He’s taken a similar approach to disaster recovery. Rather than administrating it by himself, he’s outsourced much of it to Data Storage Corporation (DSC) to take advantage of its SafeData/DR solution. This offsite service has allowed Wozniak to focus on other, more business-oriented jobs, such as replacing radio-frequency (RF)-based inventory picking with voice-based picking and concentrating on the CRM project he’s about to implement.

“Because DSC is handling the heavy lifting involved in our disaster-recovery efforts, I have the freedom to be more efficient when it comes to business-related tasks. Plus,” he adds, “it gives me more peace of mind—and it’s hard to put a price tag on that.”
