An Era of Innovation

To me, one of the most exciting things about working in our industry is the ever-changing nature of technology. New innovations keep us moving forward, and we learn and grow as individuals and organizations as we adapt and evolve along with emerging technologies like cloud and artificial intelligence (AI). At IBM, our history of innovation in computing dates back to the introduction of the Automatic Sequence Controlled Calculator in 1944 (ibm.co/2KhpCDO), which performed additions in a third of a second and multiplications in 6 seconds. Compare that to IBM’s recently debuted Summit supercomputer (ibm.co/2y1h3Mw), which is currently the fastest in the world with the capability to perform mathematical calculations at the rate of 200 quadrillion per second running on IBM POWER9* architecture. It’s pretty mind-blowing to think about how much progress we have made in less than 75 years since that original IBM computer was introduced.

On the flip side, rapid changes in technology can be challenging for many businesses, particularly those with limited budgets or staff resources to support ongoing change. With the launch of our POWER9 processor-based servers this year, our IBM Power Systems* team is working hard to guide and support clients as they upgrade their infrastructure so they can take full advantage of the great performance, reliability, security and new features of these future-forward servers to grow their businesses (ibm.co/2J4pfw9).

Think back to when your business got its first IBM Power Systems server. What era of technology were you living in? What else was happening in the tech industry, and in the world? POWER5 originally launched in 2004, the same year as Facebook, and POWER6* was announced in 2007—the same year the original iPhone was introduced to the market. For clients running POWER7* in their data centers, their servers have been around since 2010—the same year Uber debuted. I don’t know about you, but for me, it’s hard to recall a world without the pervasive force of social media, the always-on connectivity our society has achieved with smartphones, tablets, and Internet of Things devices, or the convenience of ride-sharing apps and other mobile services that have exploded in the past 14 years.

I’m proud that the IBM Power Systems platform has proven to be the long-lasting, resilient, strong-performing servers that our clients trust with their mission-critical data. But with change comes new opportunities, and I hope that all our clients will consider what their business can achieve by moving to POWER9. Whether it’s providing the foundational infrastructure for a private or hybrid cloud environment, or gaining insights to deliver superior customer experiences with AI, POWER9 processor-based servers are designed to support your business transformation for the next era of innovation. No matter where you are in your journey, our team is standing by to help with the best infrastructure solutions to meet your specific business needs.
