Perhaps no other project today is as popular as server consolidation. Properly implemented, it can help increase manageability, availability, scalability and performance while reducing total cost of ownership (TCO). Server consolidation can eliminate extra, disparate servers, excessive licensing and maintenance costs, and the headache of managing huge, inflexible physical server farms. But the primary reason consolidation projects get approved is cost. These days, all approved projects must offer significant ROI, and server consolidation can provide attractive ROI and TCO.

A second motivation has been the recent, dramatic improvement and adoption of virtualization, without which server consolidation isn’t a hot trend. Innovations in virtualization have made consolidation a viable business solution. It’s worth noting that, while VMware has been getting much of the virtualization attention in recent years, IBM wrote the book on it and has a 40-year-plus history with virtualization.

Let’s examine five business problems server consolidation addresses and see what makes it, and IBM Power Systems* servers specifically, so popular.
