That hands-on experience, Wetter says, has set him apart from other candidates when interviewing for jobs. “While I can say that I have Web, mobile and desktop-application development skills, I can also boast mainframe skills, and that covers the whole spectrum,” he says. “Companies tend to like the range of skills in a candidate, especially with the heterogeneous mixture of technology you will see supporting many infrastructures today.” The experience paid off: Wetter now works for a Fortune 500 company.

Robert Nardella, infrastructure senior manager at Citi in Weehawken, N.J., is taking the z/OS certificate courses offered through the IDCP at Marist. At Citi, he’s responsible for the management of monitoring, operation and recovery of Citi’s mainframe environment. With his staff of nine, he manages the operation of Citi’s mainframe LPARs.

Three years ago Citi launched an internal effort to address the aging population in enterprise mainframe talent and established a training program for enterprise mainframe computing. Nardella says although his tenure and position made him ineligible for that program, Citi offered him the opportunity to participate in the System z courses at Marist.

“These courses have benefited me by helping me to correctly interpret some of my daily experiences with the products that comprise an enterprise-mainframe platform and intelligently be a part of the processes to remediate, and improve them,” Nardella says.
