The Master the Mainframe competition, powered by AngelHack and sponsored by the IBM Z* Academic Initiative, is one of the largest global student competitions designed to teach students how to code and build new innovations on the mainframe.

The contest is divided into three parts. Part 1 is geared toward mainframe novices and includes basic concepts on connection and navigation, general ISPF functions, and JCL. Part 2 changes from year to year, but can include anything from new programming languages, RACF* security, database administration and manipulation, advanced ISPF functions, and more. Part 3 also changes from year to year and revolves around a real-world challenge that many mainframe shops could face. Students must think like a data scientist, a data analyst and many other mainframe career roles to win one of the top spots.

Addressing the Skills Gap

Many IT organizations are impacted by the growing skills gap as experts reach retirement age. This problem is particularly relevant on the mainframe. But as a contest designed to build skills around IT infrastructure and operations, Master the Mainframe is contributing to closing this gap.
