Just as steel revolutionized construction during the Industrial Revolution, so could the innovations in the IBM zEnterprise* System change the structure of enterprise data centers for businesses beyond the 21st Century.

Beyond immediate consolidation and performance benefits, clients can—for the first time—obtain an end-to-end management view across multiple platforms. This allows them to build on mainframe data-serving capabilities for realtime data analytics—resulting in revenue growth and market advantage while improving control of the IT environment and its costs.

Working Under Pressure

Many C-level executives and IT managers are faced with inflexible and unaffordable IT infrastructures that inhibit their capability to deliver improved business results. Consider several observations from recent IBM surveys.

  • More than 70 percent of IT budgets simply maintain current operations.
  • There are now 32.6 million installed servers worldwide, yet 85 percent of computer capacity is idle and 15 percent of servers run 24-7 without being active on a daily basis.
  • 1.2 zettabytes (1.2 trillion gigabytes) of information exist in the digital universe.
  • 70 percent of CIOs want to better leverage their data for business insight.

With all of these challenges, IT budgets on average are growing at a rate of less than 0.8 percent per year. This presents a dilemma for business and IT leaders: how to balance the need to support daily operations, yet fund critical projects to improve business results and be prepared for the future.

We’re entering a smarter era of computing. Clients recognize that one architecture doesn’t address the challenges their IT organizations face and they need solutions that allow flexibility and integration to improve IT efficiencies, while maintaining operational quality, availability and security.

The value of hosting core business applications on IBM System z* servers has long been known. Thousands of leading clients run business-critical ERP, CRM and industry solutions from SAP, Oracle and core banking applications from leading ISVs on mainframes. The platform’s inherent reliability, availability and serviceability have made it the cornerstone of large-scale enterprise and banking solutions worldwide.

The zEnterprise System extends the use of the System z environment for the data serving of core business applications to distributed application serving—integrating and centralizing management of complex applications running across z/OS*, Linux* on System z, AIX*, and Linux* or Windows* on System x* servers.

The multiplatform management capabilities enable clients to extend those benefits by collocating their business applications and data. Applications may be deployed on their optimum platform while integrating more closely to the required data. Beyond the immediate consolidation and performance benefits, clients can, for the first time, obtain an end-to-end management view across multiple platforms.

“Organizations that use IT to transform their business ultimately reap the most benefits,” says IBM Fellow and Systems Chief Engineer Dr. Guru Rao. “Efficiency isn’t just looking at the front end, it’s looking at the front end and the back end and how they work together.”
