IBM Offers New Servers and More

IBM i gets some new goodies in latest IBM announcements

Tuesday brought a flood of significant IBM i announcements, including new POWER7 processor-based servers, Solution Edition servers and more. These products will be covered in-depth in the upcoming September issue of IBM Systems Magazine, Power Systems edition, where we’ll feature interviews with key IBM executives including IBM Offering Manager Tim Stack and IBM i Architect Steve Will. Until then, here’s a sneak peek at what’s been announced.

New Servers

Four new Power Express servers join the Power Systems family. IBM Power 710 Express and Power 730 Express 2U rack-mount servers offer 4 to 16 processor cores. IBM Power 720 Express and Power 740 Express 4U rack-mount or deskside servers offering 4 to 16 processor cores. The 720 Express and 740 Express are ideal for the IBM i client, as these models provide the memory, DASD and internal tapes options most often purchased. The 710 Express and 730 Express are rack-dense servers, ideal for distributed, infrastructure workloads. IBM also announced the high-end Power 795, offering 16 to 256 processor cores.

IBM also announced IBM i Solutions Editions, available for the Power 720 and 740. In partnership with leading IBM i ISVs, these optimized offerings are focused on reducing cost, risk and implementation time for deploying business solutions. SAP, JD Edwards, Lawson and Infor are among the industry leading ISVs offering solutions based upon the new Solutions Editions. These models and configurations were selected to provide optimized performance, cost and scalability for small and midsize businesses.

All servers will be generally available on Sept. 10, 2010, and will support IBM i 7.1 and 6.1.

More Goodies

IBM i 7.1 workload management is enhanced to support the capability to limit the number of cores a selected workload will be able to run on concurrently. This allows the maximum number of cores used by a workload to be capped by a hard limit.

IBM i can now support the installation of new partitions from images on the network for POWER7 processor-based servers.

The i Edition Express for BladeCenter S, a preloaded, bundled solution for IBM i clients, can now be ordered with the POWER7 BladeCenter PS700 Express. Two configurations are available—SAS Switch Module or SAS RAID Controller Switch Module. The i Edition Express for BladeCenter S configurations are preloaded with IBM i.

IBM i 7.1 supports the latest solid-state drives (SSD) offering utilizing space efficient packaging and higher capacity SSD. You can utilize PCIe RAID and SSD SAS Adapters with 177 GB SSD module with eMLC features and IBM i 7.1 storage management and database support for SSD to achieve higher performance for your storage subsystems. The November issue will feature this new SSD technology.

IBM i 7.1 support is available for the PCIe cryptographic adapter providing additional performance and function with improved reliability, availability and serviceability (RAS) features. The adapter provides a powerful, tamper-resistant solution for POWER7 and POWER6 clients who handle secure cryptographic and digital signature workload in their business in a highly efficient manner.

IBM i will support IBM ProtecTIER technology, which features data deduplication to shrink space and speed backups.

PowerVM VIOS 2.2.0 with IBM i 7.1 and 6.1.1 partitions support the QLogic 8Gb Blade HBAs to attach DS8100, DS8300 and DS8700 storage systems via NPIV. This allows easy migration from existing DS8100, DS8300 and DS8700 storage to a blade environment. Full PowerHA support is also available with virtual Fibre Channel and the DS8100/DS8300/DS8700, which includes metro mirroring, global mirroring, flash copy and LUN level switching.
