  • Deep Thinking in IBM Rochester With Watson Analytics

Recently COMMON and IBM announced a very special collaborative event, the IBM i Driveway to Watson. As someone who was completely intrigued by the original Jeopardy! challenge between Watson and champions Ken Jennings and Brad Rutter, I was pumped—not sure how else to describe it. Pumped. I’d have the opportunity to communicate directly with Watson, the same Watson that is now being used in the healthcare space, making significant strides in patient care and outcomes.  For two days, we would be working with IBM i experts who would demonstrate various ways to exploit this cognitive technology and better understand a completely new way of thinking, using a modern business computing paradigm. I didn’t know exactly what to expect but again, I was pumped.

    Announcing IBM i 7.3 TR3 and IBM i 7.2 TR7

Today IBM is announcing the latest Technology Refreshes (TRs) for our two most current releases: IBM i 7.3 TR3 and IBM i 7.2 TR7. As long-time readers will know, the IBM i strategy includes twice a year deliveries of new function, allowing many parts of the IBM i OS and its related products to fulfill customer requirements between major releases.

Promoting IBM i—TCO, TCA, Reliability and Strategy

Several of my blogs this year have concerned the topic of preparing yourself to promote the value of IBM i to your organization. Today, we’re going to discuss three other resources you have, two of which were published very recently.

Educating Fresh Faces—Boot Camp, Summit and More

Last time I talked about the Fresh Faces who have been joining our IBM i community. Seeing new people getting started is great. But once they get here, how do they learn what they need to know?  Today’s blog will talk about a couple of ways, in particular, and briefly mention some other ways.

    First: COMMON’s Boot Camp.

Promoting IBM i – Fresh Faces!

In my previous two blogs, I’ve talked about reasons your executives might have to do a review of your platforms—things which indicate that the time is right to get prepared to promote the value of IBM i to your business leaders. To do that promotion, you need information. Today I’m going to address one of those reasons: staffing.

Promoting IBM i—Buzzwords & Hot Buttons

In my last blog, I started a series to help you prepare yourself, if your organization is going to evaluate the future of your IBM i on Power infrastructure. I want to help people avoid panic, and instead move into “promotion” mode—explaining the value of IBM i to your company. Last time, I wrote about Triggering Events—things that can happen in your company which often result in re-evaluation. But in addition to those events, organizations can initiate a platform evaluation when certain hot button issues or buzzwords become big in a company. Let’s think about each of those.

    Promoting IBM i—Triggering Events

If you are involved in the infrastructure of your company, or you are on the application development team in your company, you have specific skills related to the platforms you use. Those skills are your “bread and butter”—they put food on your table. And yet, at some point in your career, the leaders in your company are going to evaluate whether they want to move away from those platforms.

IBM i Strategy: The Cooperative Game

For the past couple of years I’ve had the opportunity to talk about strategy many times. Now, this makes sense, since setting the strategy for IBM i is a big part of my job. But I’ve been able to talk about strategy more generally, and in particular, I’ve explained how my interest in strategy games has influenced the way I approach the IBM i strategy. So, today, I’m going to talk about one of the most important aspects of that influence: the Cooperative Strategy game.

    IBM i Thoughts: COMMON Conference

The COMMON Annual Conference this year was a great experience. I’ve been trying to summarize for people why this particular event was even better than the usual excellent conferences we have when IBM i folks get together. I keep coming up with more and more reasons.  For example, the IBM team was finally recognized as the Wizards they are.
