  • RPG IV and the Biebs

Back in April we blogged about RPG IV's 21st birthday. Subsequently we celebrated with birthday cake, champagne, and party favors at the RPG & DB2 Summit in October. During that celebration we posed a number of RPG IV trivia questions to the attendees. Since it is one of our family traditions to play silly trivia games at Christmas we thought we'd pose those questions to our readers! We often enjoy frustrating ourselves trying to answer the Tuesday Trivia questions from Ken Jennings's (big Jeopardy winner until Watson came along…)

    More on RDi's value equation

Earlier we blogged about the value/cost equation of RDi. It seems that great minds think alike because Charlie Guarino blogged on a similar topic recently as well. Charlie took a very different approach by putting some actual ROI figures in place to help make the case for RDi's value.

How Much Is Too Much for RDi?

We hear a lot of comments/complaints about the cost of purchasing licenses for RDi. We hear it in face-to-face conversations at conferences, on forums and mailing lists, LinkedIn discussions, blog comments and most recently as a comment on our EXTRA article about RDi. Evolving the Language - History of RPG IV Part 5

At the end of the previous episode of this saga on the history of RPG IV, I mentioned that in this blog entry I would explain why the No. 1 outstanding user request (parameters for subroutines) was never implemented. So here's the story as best I remember it.

"It's Alive!" - History of RPG IV Part 4

In the last thrilling (?) installment we left you with the cliffhanger that "there was still one more skirmish to be fought in the battle ..." and indeed there was.

Excel and RPG: Sometimes Things Just Don't Add Up!

This post was prompted by an email from a reader asking for assistance with a problem trying to duplicate an Excel spreadsheet in RPG. The method being used was to extract the required data using SQL and then pass the raw data to Excel to perform the calculations. Rather than have this extra Excel step, the thought was to have RPG produce the report directly from the extracted data. Only one problem--the reader couldn't make the RPG version match the Excel one.

Your Baby Is Ugly - History of RPG IV Part 3

In the last part of the story I mentioned that we had started to go "open Kimono" on the design of RPG IV and that this subsequently caused problems ... That's where we pick up the story this time.
