The Future in Three Words: Cloud, Web, Mobile

September 15, 2015

Since this spring's IDUG conference, I've written extensively about the future of IBM z Systems and DB2, and specifically the new capabilities that are enabling the mainframe to serve as a development platform for cloud, web and mobile applications.

If you're looking to better understand where IBM is taking z Systems, I recommend this presentation from IBM's Jorn Thyssen.

The whole thing is well worth your time, but I found two slides particularly clarifying. The first is slide 36, which shows how Bluemix is being used to develop applications that use zOS Connect to access back-end applications running in batch, CICS and IMS. These applications access DB2, VSAM and IMS data sources.

Then there's slide 38, which shows mobile apps connecting through IBM MobileFirst Platform cloud APIs. These APIs connect directly through enterprise APIs that all use z/OS Connect discovery services to access the back end (DB2, IMS, CICS and batch).

As stand-alone solutions, Bluemix, zOSConnect and the IBM MobileFirst platform have much to offer, and I look forward to telling you more about them. As for the future of the mainframe, the takeaway is simple: IBM is using standards-based REST APIs to develop technology that allows mainframe applications to instantly access critical business data. These REST APIs can then be easily integrated into modern applications in a secure and managed way. This demonstrates that the mainframe, with its unparalleled availability and security, can be the platform of choice for development of cloud, web and mobile applications.
