DB2 12 for z/OS Tools: What's Improved

Following up on last week's DB12 for z/OS announcement, I want to discuss the supporting tools, which include the DB2 utilities.

The tools listed in this announcement are being released on two different dates:

I’m not going to go through all the different products and what’s new. You can find all these details in the announcement letter. I'll focus instead on the enhancements to the DB2 utilities.

The DB2 Utilities Suite for z/OS V12.1 delivers many enhancements, with the emphasis on day one support for DB2 12. Additional improvements are designed to help customers reduce system resource consumption. Reducing CPU usage as well as elapse times are the priorities.

DB2 12 continues to diminish the need to conduct data re-clustering for application performance, a task that requires a costly sort. This is accomplished through improvements to the optimizer, along with enhanced I/O performance, caching capabilities and contiguous buffer pools.

Paralleling the reduced need to run REORGs for application performance, we'll start to see an increase in the use of IBM REORG for Online Schema Evolution. With DB2 12  these schema changes can now be performed without taking an outage: insert a partition, convert Universal Table Space (UTS) partition by range (PBR) to a new structure called relative page number (RPN), and defer column-level alter and large object (LOB) compression.

These are just some of the highlights. Be sure to check the announce letter to learn more. As I wrote last week, the level of innovation in DB2 12 is unprecedented. The utilities are another example of the unique capabilities found in the newest DB2 version.
