    The Evolution of DB2 Block Fetch

    When DB2 was first released, a distributed application would open a cursor and fetch a single row of data. This fetch request would go to DB2, then DB2 would return one row to the application. If the application requested 20 rows to be displayed on the screen, then 20 cross-network requests had to be made. This would greatly reduce the response time for the given application.

    The Page Residency Time Metric

    During my years as a DB2 systems programmer, I spent time tuning buffer pools. A key metric I'd use is buffer pool hit ratio, which is a measure of how often a page access (a getpage) is satisfied without requiring an I/O operation. However, it's been a long time since I've worked on buffer pools, something I was reminded of when I read IBMer John Campbell's presentation on page residency time.
