Even though DB2 12 is now available, a fair number of customers are now or have recently migrated from DB2 10 to DB2 11. I know this because I've been getting queries about subsystem parameters (zparms) default changes in DB2 11. So I'll share with you what I've been telling them: IBM, thankfully, documents this information in the Knowledge Center's What’s New guide.

MERGE Statement Enhancements in DB2 12

The MERGE statement has been around awhile. It was actually among the first topics I covered upon launching DB2utor in 2007.

    DB2 Tools Fix Lists

The IBM Support page lists all fixes for DB2 and IMS tools products. You'll find summaries of problem descriptions (APARs) and fixes (PTFs), by product and version. The list of APARs can be downloaded as a CSV file and imported into a spreadsheet or database for sorting and filtering.

Parameter Places Retry Claims on Stopped Objects

This should be obvious to anyone who reads this blog, but each DB2 release has literally dozens of new features and enhancements. I write about them on a weekly basis, but occasionally even I miss something. For instance, I recently learned about a new parameter introduced in DB2 10 that's designed to improve productivity (and reduce frustration) in your test and development environment.

    DB2 12 Session Token Support

If you have a client application using Parallel Sysplex workload balancing (WLB), you'll want to take advantage of session token support in DB2 12. But before I get into this new feature, some quick background.

    DB2 12 Debuts Advanced Triggers

A trigger defines a set of actions that represent the business logic that should occur when INSERT, UPDATE or DELETE operations are performed on a given table or view. Triggers can be used to update tables or generate or transform values to be used to insert or update rows. They can also invoke functions that operate within and outside of DB2.

A Welcome Alternative to Object Ownership Change

Most DBAs dread changing the ownership of an object. You have to take the database offline, sometimes for an extensive period, to unload, drop, recreate and reload the data, run runstats and--finally--rebind all the application packages. I’m sure many of you have at least a horror story or two about this experience.

    DB2 12 Catalog Availability Improvements

During the early releases of DB2, enterprises (specifically DBAs) would restrict dynamic SQL from running in their production OLTP environments. This choice stemmed primarily from the likelihood of ad hoc OLAP queries adversely impacting the performance of OLTP applications. Of course, over the next 20-plus years, this issue has been largely mitigated by the widespread adoption of dynamic SQL. Dynamic SQL continues to be a focus of DB2 development, and DB2 12 features an important enhancement in the area of catalog availability.
