Shirley S. Savage

Shirley S. Savage began her career as an energy journalist, writing about the oil and coal markets for several publications owned by The McGraw-Hill Companies. She was the first Western journalist to interview Solidarity’s coal mining branch in Katowice, Poland.  As an oil markets expert, she appeared regularly on CBNC and other networks. She received the Distinguished Achievement in Editorial Excellence award from McGraw-Hill for her story, “Oil and the environment--the crucial year of 1994.” Shirley also participated as a mentor in the first two McGraw-Hill mentoring programs and was a member of the company’s Women in Management Group.

Leaving McGraw-Hill in 1999, Shirley broadened her writing to include banking and finance for Global Finance magazine, advanced manufacturing and nanotechnology for the Technical Insights division of Frost & Sullivan, marketing to small business for the MarketingSherpa.com group, risk management for Financial Times Energy (where she had the best selling management report for 2000), and technology topics for MSP Communications. She continues to speak about energy, appearing most recently on WCSH-TV’s “207” program.

A graduate of the University of Illinois, Urbana-Champaign, Shirley is co-author of Power Market Risk: How To Survive (& Prosper) In Crazy Times and Back To Coal: Why Utilities Must Reconsider This Cheap, Plentiful Fuel. In her non-business hours, she’s a volunteer for Small Paws Rescue, a Bichon Frise rescue. She is very proud to call Maine her home.
