SSDs Boost Performance
SSD Options by Server
177 GB SSDs can be plugged into any of the POWER7 SAS-based, internal-drive bays. IBM has specific configuration rules for SSDs, which help ensure that server configured with SSDs operate with balanced performance. This, therefore, helps to maximize the benefits of your SSD investment. The following section provides configuration information for SAS drives that are installed in the internal SAS drive bays. The RAID options listed describe the RAID functionality provided by the integrated SAS controllers:
710/730
- Three SAS drive bays, single backplane (RAID 0, 1, 10)
- Six SAS drive bays, single backplane (RAID 0, 1, 10)
- Six SAS drive bays, single backplane (RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10)
720/740
- Six SAS drive bays, single backplane (RAID 0, 1, 10)
- Six SAS drive bays, split backplane (RAID 0, 1, 10)
- Eight SAS drive bays, single backplane (RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10)
750
- Eight SAS drive bays, single backplane (no integrated RAID)
- Eight SAS drive bays, split backplane (no integrated RAID)
- An optional RAID enablement card adds dual write cache and hardware RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10 to all eight disk bays in single backplane mode, or the first four bays in the split backplane configuration
755
- Eight SAS drive bays, single backplane (no integrated or optional internal RAID)
- Eight SAS drive bays, split backplane (no integrated or optional internal RAID)
770/780
- Six SAS drive bays, dual split backplane (RAID 0, 6)
- Six SAS drive bays, triple split backplane (RAID 0, 6)
- Six SAS drive bays, single backplane (RAID 0, 1, 5, 6, 10)
795
- Each No. 5803 I/O drawer features 26 SAS drive bays, which can be split into one, two or four backplanes
- A maximum of 18 SSDs are supported per No. 5803 drawer (nine per split)
- Each backplane is then connected to a standard SAS controller (no RAID) or a SAS RAID adapter, which provides hardware RAID 0, 5, 6, and 10 support
