Why Are Mainframes Crucial to Your DevOps?
DevOps is now a proven best practice set of strategies that provides real competitive advantage.
By Jeff Cherrington ,
As Chris O’Malley, CEO of Compuware, mentioned in the 2020 IBM Systems Mainframe Solutions Directory, a Forrester study shows most enterprises with mainframes run more than half their mission essential applications from that platform; and approximately 75% of customer-facing applications depend on the mainframe for their operation. Attempting to adopt DevOps while excluding more than half of your mission-essential technology and applications can only be an exercise in frustration. Implementing DevOps successfully requires orchestrating your enterprise technology to serve the critical value streams LoB leaders need in order to satisfy customers and grow the business. Doing so requires that the value streams be managed using technology that actually embraces and enhances mainframe capabilities in the DevOps approach. This type of value stream automation must delegate work to mainframe job schedulers or to onboard scheduling in mainframe ERP and other applications.
This modern approach ensures the work that’s currently done on all sides is integrated and provides specific capabilities when needed. Value stream automation for DevOps must provide the visual palette for designing the flows, dependencies and conditionality of the LoB leaders’ vision for their value streams, and the means to manage each individual instance of execution with complete transactional integrity, visibility and immediate escalation and notification when errors occur.
As you automate your DevOps work, ensure that mainframe is easily included.
