With the recent availability of RDi V9.5.1 (see our post about it here
), we’ve heard a lot of questions about how to install it.
For existing RDi users, there are the inevitable questions about whether it requires a new installation and a new/updated Activation Kit key. Quick answer to both is good news: it’s just an update, not a re-install, and your existing key will still work.
For those of you who, like us, have been running RDi in a Windows environment for years and waiting with bated breath for an OS X native RDi, it’s still good news! Yes, it’s a new install on Mac (of course) and after installation you’ll have to manage your keys and apply your Activation Kit. But it is so worth it to run RDi natively on your Mac--no more Windows environment required!
Even if you’re just now getting started and installing for the first time on either Windows or OS X, read on for our suggestions for installing the trial version, which can be turned into a full version once you get your key in the form of an Activation Kit.
There are two primary ways to install RDi.
1) You can download two huge installation files using either Download Director or http. Even if your network speed is fast, IBM’s servers seem to make this a very slow process. We’ve heard of many people abandoning this approach after more than an hour’s time.
2) You can use the web installation process, which will download only the code needed for your situation.
Unless you’re going to be installing V9.5.1 on a large number of systems, you’re probably better off using the web installation method. We installed using the web method with our not-exactly-lightning-speed cable internet connection and it took us about 20 minutes or so to install.
Sadly, most people just search for RDi trial, take the link to install it and for some reason there is no option to do the web install option from there.
Last year we blogged about the instructions on DeveloperWorks on how to do the web installation. Those instructions are still (mostly) valid and do work for Mac users as well but we thought we’d provide our own streamlined version of the steps here. We have never tried the “Automated Procedure” documented on that page. But we have done the “Manual Procedure” on both OS X and Windows, so here are some hints based on our experience.
You will need an IBM ID to do this, so a preparatory step is to create an IBM ID if you don’t have one. If you do have an ID, make sure you know the password (or ask for help to retrieve/reset your password).
There are three basic steps involved:
1) Update IBM Installation Manager--or install it if you don’t have it installed already.
2) Configure IBM Installation Manager to use the correct Repository
3) Install RDi 9.5.1.
Step 1: Install or update IBM Installation Manager
If you do not have IBM Installation Manager (IM) installed yet, skip ahead to “New IM install” below.
If you have RDi installed on your system already, then you already have Installation Manager (IM). You will however need to update it to the latest version to get RDi V9.5.1.
To update IM, start it. Then click File > Preferences. On the Updates preferences page, ensure that the “Search for Installation Manager updates” box is checked.
Once that is done, click on the Update process on the main page in IM. It should notify you that there is an update available for IM itself (Note: Version 1.8.5 is current as of this writing. The instructions in the document linked above describe how to install 1.8.3--you will need 1.8.5 to get the latest version of RDi). Select the option to update IM and install those updates.
New IM Install: If you don’t have IM installed at all, then download it from Fix Central
Click on the “Download package” link. This should take you to a table of platforms with links for each. Find your platform--most likely either Windows or Mac OSX--then click on the FC link by that platform. Choose the “refresh pack” for either OS X or for either 32-bit or 64-bit Windows. Then download the file and install it.
To save time when installing future updates (and to make sure you have the most current version installed) it would be a good idea to go ahead and set the preference to “Search for Installation Manager updates,” as described above.
Step 2: Configure IM’s Repository
Once you have the correct version of IM, start it up and click File > Preferences. The on the Repositories preference page, you’ll need to add a repository for RDi V9.5. (Note - you may already have this if you installed V9.5 this way originally.) The repository location you need is:
(Yes, we know it seems to be looking only for V9.5, not V9.5.1, but it will find the latest version from this link.)
Step 3: Install RDi 9.5.1
Back on the main page of IM, click on Install and follow the instructions to install RDi V9.5.1.
