In the 7.2 release, IBM made many changes to improve temporary storage tracking. I’ve written about these enhancements in IBM i 7.2 Improved Temporary Storage Tracking Part 1, Part2, and Part 3 blogs. You may also want to reread the blog, Understanding Disk Space Usage, which reviews IBM i temporary and permanent storage concepts.

There was a short statement in the IBM i 7.2 announcement material: New PTF improvements for tracking of Security Audit Log. That’s not very clear is it? With IBM i 7.2, you now have the ability to track PTF installation history in the security audit journal.

The Simple Network Management Protocol version 3 (SNMPv3) support in IBM i 7.2 has been enhanced to provide additional function for native IBM i SNMP managers. New APIs are now available to perform SNMPv3 operations. These new APIs provide the capability to send GET, GETNEXT and SET SNMP requests using SNMPv3 and to perform SNMPv3 agent engine ID discovery and time synchronization. The APIs are snmpDiscover_v3(), snmpGet_v3(), snmpGetnext_v3(), snmpSet_v3() and snmpFreeAuthCB_v3(). An SNMP manager application must first use the snmpDiscover_v3() API to perform agent SNMP engine ID discovery and time synchronization.

This October is one of the busiest work months I can remember. Hopefully most of you already know about the IBM announcements earlier this week, with the big news being the addition of the Enterprise Power Systems models with POWER8; IBM i 7.1 TR9 and 7.2 TR1 were also announced. You can find out more on the IBM i developerWorks site about 7.1 TR9 and 7.2 TR1 and Steve Will wrote about it as well in Announcing 7.2 TR1 (and 7.1 TR9 – and More!). I’ll be writing more detailed blogs on the systems management enhancements in coming weeks … but I’m just too busy this October!!

One of the many systems management enhancements in the 7.2 release was the addition of message monitors and system monitors to the IBM Navigator for i GUI. This is the first step in making Management Central functions available in the Web console. If you are on 7.1 or earlier, you already have these monitors with Management Central in the System i Navigator GUI. This blog highlights the major differences you’ll discover with the monitors on the 7.2 release.

About a year ago, I wrote a short blog on the IBM Power Systems Webinars. These technical webinars are a great resource to learn more about IBM Power Systems and virtualization topics. This week I have just an update – the replays for these webinars are available on YouTube.

Asset protection is not the most exciting topic for technologists. Modern data processing falls into two basic camps:
1) Transaction processing – the heartbeat of the business
2) Analytics – gaining insights to guide and transform the business

Recently I attended the IBM Power Systems Technical Symposium in Melbourne Australia, followed by a similar conference the next week in Auckland New Zealand. This was my first trip to the southern hemisphere and what a great trip it was! In addition to speaking at the conferences and talking with IBM i clients, I took some vacation and was a tourist for a few days.
