  • Announcing IBM i 7.3 TR2 & 7.2 TR6

This might come as a bit of a surprise, but it’s announce day again.  I know, I know–it doesn’t seem all that long ago that we announced IBM i 7.3 Technology Refresh 1. And it wasn’t!  But this year’s “spring” announcement of IBM i 7.3 TR2 (and the accompanying 7.2 TR6) comes a little earlier than spring.  (Maybe we’re all just hoping for a short winter!)  Whatever the reason, it’s time again for me to give you an overview of the announcement.

    IBM i Open Source Directions

Late last year, I asked my followers on Twitter and Facebook what topics I should address early in 2017. I heard several ideas, but the one I heard most is today’s topic: Open Source on IBM i. In fact, when I started the year with a different topic, one of the comments my blog received was another request for the open source topic.

    IBM i Future – 2017 Update

One of the most common questions people ask me is “What’s the future for IBM i?”

I think I’ve gotten that question 20 or more times since the start of the year--via e-mail, LinkedIn messages, customer briefings, Twitter direct messages--and as I write this, I have only been at work for eight days in 2017.  And this is the slow part of the year.

    Executives Reinvesting in IBM i

Today I’d like you to use your imagination a little.  Today I want you to imagine you run a business – you’re an executive. This is not hard for some of you readers, because you do, and you are.  But for many of my readers, you are not upper level executives, so I’m asking you to put yourself in the position of those “bosses” in your company.  OK, so, imagine it.

    IBM i 7.3 Technology Refresh 1 Announcement

Here we go again – Announce Day!  Today, we are announcing IBM i Technology Refresh 1 (TR1), which has its GA date on November 11, 2016.  As usual, I’ll take the opportunity to highlight some of what we’re announcing here on my blog, and then encourage you to go find out more from other bloggers and from the developerWorks site.

The IBM i / COMMON Twitter blog – Part 2

Last time I covered the first three of the five “lessons” I tweeted after the COMMON Annual conference.  Today, we’ll wrap it up.  Here are the final two, with some comments.

    Lessons from COMMON: Part 1

As I was sitting in the airport after the COMMON Conference a few weeks ago, I tweeted a few thoughts: a few lessons I felt one could take away from the largest gathering of IBM i people in the western hemisphere in 2016 (and perhaps the world depending on how big the conference in Japan is this year).

    Fresh IBM i Messages

In the few months since the IBM i 7.3 announcement, many of us have been traveling to conferences and user group meetings, participating in virtual conferences or hosting webinars, and some of us have even been writing blogs. (OK, not me so much on that last one, but the rest of it, for sure.)

    IBM i 7.3 Announcement

Signs and Portents for IBM i Announcements

Remember last week’s blog? In it, I mentioned I had recently asked for topic ideas. Well, today’s blog is–in a way–a response to another suggestion I received in reply. But also, it’s something we planned to do anyway. I think you’ll see what I mean.
